Snapshots, a musical happening for 1 performer, 8-channel sounds and lighting design gets another performance on 4/3/2006 in the MEIT at UNT. The premiere on 2/13/2006 was not well documented so this is an attempt to capture the piece again in a live performance. James Woodhall contributed much to the success of the performance.

Faulk Scholar Concert Premieres

Two of Hsiao-Lan's new works received world premiere on 2/13/2006 in the MEIT at University of North Texas. As part of the agreement as a scholarship recipient, four UNT composers presented new compositions on this concert.
Tale of an Unborn Child for flute and piano was performed by flutist Cecilia Hamilton and pianist Daniel Zajicek. The subject of the piece is heavy, and the performers did a fine job carrying out the unspoken message.
Snapshots for 1 performer, 8-channel sounds, and lighting design was performed by James Woodhall. Special thanks go to lighting crew Chapman Welch and Sebastian Zaberca. This piece won the audience's applause with its humor and surprise.

SCI Region V Conference at Butler University

On the 2005 Society of Composers, Inc. Region V Conference, Hard-Boiled Wonderland is scheduled to play at 4 pm on Friday, 11/11 on a concert of all electroacoustic compositions. Electroacoustic works Green Potato II, Star Gazer, and Vase are aired on radio program Foldover on November 8, 2004. Foldover airs every Monday from 1pm - 3pm on WOBC 91.5 FM in Oberlin, Ohio and focuses primarily on electroacoustic music though recordings of acoustic works are broadcast.
Live internet broadcasts are now available through RealPlayer.
Foldover broadcasts on Mondays, from 13 - 15 hrs, EST (17 - 19 hrs, GMT), and is organized by composer Tom Lopez.

Orchestral work Etude for orchestra, entered in the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize 2004 competition, was one of the three finalist works in the competition. The work was particularly commended by both the preliminary and final prize juries. Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize is a national competition administered by the School of Music at the University of Minnesota.

In the past year, I completed as many as 5 compositions and started a sixth one. I also was fortunate to have quite a few performances, including 4 world premieres, in several states, two countries, and 3 awards for my compositions. Daniel and I got engaged in September 2003 and will get married in the summer of 2004. Year 2003 was a great year for me and I hope to continue this level of devotion to my music in the coming year.

Trio for viola, vibraphone, and pianoforte is going to be premiered in the MEIT at UNT on the Spectrum Concert Series on 11/25/2003 at 8PM. Performers will be Christopher Williams on viola, Josh Jennings on vibraphone, and Ling-Yu Kan on pianoforte. Rugged Edges wins Competition for Composers

Rugged Edges for string orchestra is one of the three winners of the 2003 Chamber Orchestra of Denton Competition for Composers. The judges' panel consists of the conducting staff of the COD, a member of the orchestra, and a member of the composition faculty at the University of North Texas. The world premier will take place in March 2004 in Denton Texas under the direction of Mr. Dax Stokes with the Chamber Orchestra of Denton.

Green Potato II wins Pauline Oliveros Prize

Tape piece Green Potato II wins the Pauline Oliveros Prize for year 2003. This competitive award is administered by the International Alliance of Women in Music in a project called Search for New Music in its 23rd edition. Celebrated composer Pauline Oliveros set up this prize to encourage women composers working with the electroacoustic media.

Composition for two tingkliks and computer A Golden Leaf Drifts Downstream has been selected by Electronic Music Midwest (EMM), which will take place on 10/30/2003 and will last for two days. There were over 200 pieces submitted for this year's festival. Hsiao-Lan Wang and Daniel Zajicek will be performing on the tingkliks for the festival.

Hsiao-Lan Wang recently received an ASCAP PLUS award 2002 from ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) for the many performances and compositions she generated during year 2002. The award is judged by the Standard Awards Panel from distinguished members of the music community outside of ASCAP.

Star Gazer was performed wonderfully by Ms. Hamilton. She brought out the meditative spirit of the flute and projected still but free images with her playing. On the technology side, there were some clicks that I will need to look into even though they were not present before the performance.

Work in progress Star Gazer for flute and computer will have a test performance on 05/08/2003 in MEIT at 1:30 PM. Flutist Cecilia Hamilton will perform on solo flute with myself at the mixing board. This piece tries to bring out the serene quality of the flute in an extended tonal style. The performance is open to the public.

My latest work A Golden Leaf Drifts Downstream received its test performance on 03/27/2003 in MEIT at the University of North Texas.

The piece is written for two Indonesian xylophones and computer (3'32"). As the first project written in the Max/MSP environment, it turned out to be quite successful. Performers on the xylophones were myself and Chapman Welch.
