Host: Max Shea. 10/15/2006 Winner of Athena Competition Trio for viola, vibraphone, and piano is the winner of the 2007 Athena Festival Chamber Music Composition Competition. A residency associated with the award will be at the Murray State University, Kentucky, March 6-9 during the 2007 Athena Festival. More info about the festival can be found here. 10/11/2006 Improvisation with Jin Hi Kim Jin Hi Kim on komungo, Wang Jing on erhu, and myself on yangchin 10/09/2006. As the closing piece for a concert featuring composer/performer Jin Hi Kim, an improvisation session brought these three instruments to a crossroad of traditions.

For more information, click here. 5/9/2006 Martian Gardens, part VI Green Potato II was broadcast 4/30/2006 on radio show Martian Gardens. 4/5/2006 Another performance of Snapshots Snapshots, a musical happening for 1 performer, 8-channel sounds and lighting design gets another performance on 4/3/2006 in the MEIT at UNT. The premiere on 2/13/2006 was not well documented so this is an attempt to capture the piece again in a live performance. James Woodhall contributed much to the success of the performance. 
3/26/2006 New Horizons Concert at Radford University Star Gazer for flute and computer is part of a concert celebrating new music, played by flutist Leslie Marrs. Two of Hsiao-Lan's new works received world premiere on 2/13/2006 in the MEIT at University of North Texas.
As part of the agreement as a scholarship recipient, four UNT composers

WMUA FM 91.1 10/07/2005 SCI Region V Conference at Butler University On the 2005 Society of Composers, Inc. Region V Conference, Hard-Boiled Wonderland is scheduled to play at 4 pm on Friday, 11/11 on a concert of all electroacoustic compositions. Butler University is hosting the conference this year with compositions ranging from solo, electroacoustic, chamber, to orchestral music. More info about the conference could be found here. 10/07/2005 Star Gazer at Radford University With the theme "not the usual suspects" featuring composers with diverse origins, flutist Dr. Leslie Marrs will perform my Star Gazer for flute and computer, at 8 pm on Monday, 10/17 on the campus of Radford University, Virginia. Special thanks to Dr. Bruce Mahin for his generous assistance in coordinating the electronics on this piece. 09/22/2005 Associate Conductor of FMCO Starting in the 2005 season, Hsiao-Lan is serving as the associate conductor of the Flower Mound Community Orchestras leading its Preparatory Orchestra. There are four scheduled concerts this season and we are currently auditioning new members. 08/17/2005 College Music Society National Conference As one of the winners of the Student Score Competition hosted by the College Music Society, Star Gazer for solo flute and computer has been selected to perform at the College Music Society National Conference 2005 in Quebec City, Canada. Hard-Boiled Wonderland has been selected to play on three electroacoustic music festivals in the fall of 2005. Faculty and students of the University of Oklahoma will be performing. 11/29/2004 Raupe Scholarship B. Craig Raupe Scholarship, a scholarship designed for professional development, has been awarded to me by the Student Government Association at the University of North Texas. 11/10/2004 Performance at San Jose State University Composition Green Potato II is selected to be played on the Electro-Acoustic Concert at San Jose State University Concert Hall at 7:30 PM on November 18th. International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM) gives out Search for New Music Awards annually in different categories and Libby Larsen Prize is particularly for women currently enrolled in school and the composition submitted could be for any medium. 06/15/2004 Electronic Music Midwest 2004 Star Gazer for flute and computer has been selected for performance on the Electronic Music Midwest 2004 Festival, to be held September 16-18, 2004, at Lewis University, located in the Chicago area. 06/15/2004 Finalist in the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize 2004 competition Orchestral work Etude for orchestra, entered in the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize 2004 competition, was one of the three finalist works in the competition. The work was particularly commended by both the preliminary and final prize juries. Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize is a national competition administered by the School of Music at the University of Minnesota. 06/08/2004 ASCAP PLUS Award 2004 Once again, Hsiao-Lan received an ASCAP PLUS Standard Award in 2004. The basis for the award panel determinations is the activity generated by each composer's catalog, particularly with regard to recent performances. 06/08/2004 Selected for Inclusion at SCI region IV conference Trio in two movements for viola, vibraphone, and piano has been selected for inclusion on the 2004 Society of Composers Inc. 01/15/2004 Green Potato II goes to SEAMUS Tape composition Green Potato II has been selected to participate in the 2004 SEAMUS (Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States) national conference, which will be held March 25-27 this year at San Diego State University. 01/01/2004 New Year In the past year, I completed as many as 5 compositions and started a sixth one. I also was fortunate to have quite a few performances, including 4 world premieres, in several states, two countries, and 3 awards for my compositions. Daniel and I got engaged in September 2003 and will get married in the summer of 2004. Year 2003 was a great year for me and I hope to continue this level of devotion to my music in the coming year. 11/19/2003 Trio upcoming premiere Trio for viola, vibraphone, and pianoforte is going to be premiered in the MEIT at UNT on the Spectrum Concert Series on 11/25/2003 at 8PM. Performers will be Christopher Williams on viola, Josh Jennings on vibraphone, and Ling-Yu Kan on pianoforte. This composition is in two movements and explores the possibilities of instrumental conversations. Click here for program notes. 11/11/2003 Rugged Edges wins Competition for Composers Rugged Edges for string orchestra is one of the three winners of the 2003 Chamber Orchestra of Denton Competition for Composers. The judges' panel consists of the conducting staff of the COD, a member of the orchestra, and a member of the composition faculty at the University of North Texas. The world premier will take place in March 2004 in Denton Texas under the direction of Mr. Dax Stokes with the Chamber Orchestra of Denton. 11/11/2003 Performances well-received Recent performances of A Golden Leaf Drifts Downstream and Star Gazer received numerous enthusiastic compliments and encouragement from the audience including composers Adrian Moore, Mike McFerron, Butch Rovan, and Cindy McTee, among others. I want to express my gratitude to the two wonderful performers Mr. Daniel Zajicek and Ms. Cecilia Hamilton for their dedication to my music. Hsiao-Lan Wang and Daniel Zajicek will be performing on the tingkliks with computer at the festival. 10/19/2003 Latest composition Latest composition Rugged Edges for string orchestra was completed in October 2003. This piece is written for non-professional string orchestra with an emphasis on modern textures. Click here. 07/10/2003 Green Potato II wins Pauline Oliveros Prize Tape piece Green Potato II wins the Pauline Oliveros Prize for year 2003. This competitive award is administered by the International Alliance of Women in Music in a project called Search for New Music in its 23rd edition. Celebrated composer Pauline Oliveros set up this prize to encourage women composers working with the electroacoustic media. 07/04/2003 Green Potato II premiered in France Tape piece Green Potato II received its world premiere in France on 06/14/2003 at the WORK OVERTURE PROJECT, programmed in the 33rd FESTIVAL SYNTHESE BOURGES 2003. 06/20/2003 Music Selected by EMM Composition for two tingkliks and computer A Golden Leaf Drifts Downstream has been selected by Electronic Music Midwest (EMM), which will take place on 10/30/2003 and will last for two days. There were over 200 pieces submitted for this year's festival. Hsiao-Lan Wang and Daniel Zajicek will be performing on the tingkliks for the festival. 06/06/2003 ASCAP PLUS Award Hsiao-Lan Wang recently received an ASCAP PLUS award 2002 from ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) for the many performances and compositions she generated during year 2002. The award is judged by the Standard Awards Panel from distinguished members of the music community outside of ASCAP. 05/08/2003 updates Star Gazer was performed wonderfully by Ms. Hamilton. She brought out the meditative spirit of the flute and projected still but free images with her playing. On the technology side, there were some clicks that I will need to look into even though they were not present before the performance. 05/05/2003Work in progress Star Gazer for flute and computer will have a test performance on 05/08/2003 in MEIT at 1:30 PM. Flutist Cecilia Hamilton will perform on solo flute with myself at the mixing board. This piece tries to bring out the serene quality of the flute in an extended tonal style. The performance is open to the public. 04/27/2003 updates The reading was a wonderful experience. As in most reading sessions, a lot of mistakes were involved. But I found the experience rewarding and inspiring. Please listen to the edited recording from this reading in the orchestral works page.

in Winspear Hall. The conductor will be Ai-Kuang Sun, a DMA candidate of orchestral conducting in UNT. The duration of the reading for my work will be only 20 minutes so be there on time!

My orchestral composition Etude for Orchestra (2000-2002) will be read by the UNT Symphony Orchestra on 04/25/2003 in Winspear Hall at 3:30 p.m.. You are all invited to attend the reading session! As a composer myself, nothing teaches me more about orchestration than attending a live reading session of my own work or even any other contemporary composer's. This piece was composed during a period of one year and half as my master's thesis under the guidance of the celebrated composer Chen Yi. Click here for more information on the piece.

My latest work A Golden Leaf Drifts Downstream received its test performance on 03/27/2003 in MEIT at the University of North Texas.
The piece is written for two Indonesian xylophones and computer (3'32"). As the first project written in the Max/MSP environment, it turned out to be quite successful. Performers on the xylophones were myself and Chapman Welch.
