At the Ninth Festival of Women Composers

The Hoodlebug Brass at Indiana University of Pennsylvania rehearsing Transformation

Wonderful performances, wonderful lectures, wonderful people, and wonderful weather at the Ninth Festival of Women Composers at Indiana University of Pennsylvania 3/18-3/20, 2010. The faculty brass quintet Hoodlebug did a laudable job performing my piece Transformation. It was a pleasure to work with these fine musicians

Interview at Radio Station KTRU Houston

Hsiao-Lan and Scordatura radio host Hsin-Jung in the studio of KTRU on the Rice University campus

Over the winter break, I was invited for an hour-long interview with Scordatura radio show host Hsin-Jung Tsai at 91.7 FM KTRU, Houston. I talked about my musical works, working with performers, women in music issues, the Electric Monster Laptop Ensemble, my country Taiwan, and my collaboration with visual artists and filmmakers. It was a tour de force interview that touched on many of the things that I have been putting a lot of effort into. It was also a wonderful opportunity for me to reunite with my dear friend Hsin-Jung, who is also a composer and performer.

SCORDATURA is the Houston area’s source for new directions in contemporary classical music and sound. Broadcasted on 91.7/91.5 FM KTRU, this program offers a wide variety of genres from the concert music of the early 20th century to the current trends in sound ecology. Here is KTRU’s website.

Elected President of IAWM

International Alliance for Women in Music‘s board members have recently elected Hsiao-Lan as the new president. I am most honored to be able to serve in this capacity, and I thank the Board to give me this wonderful opportunity to further contribute to the organization. I have served on the advocacy committee, and we have an on-going weekly radio request campaign for the past four years. Two years ago, I was elected as board member, and now as president. I must say that IAWM has provided me a supportive community that not only enhances my musical career, but also allows me to get to know many excellent artists and scholars personally.

Beijing 北京

The first trip I took to Beijing during late April this year was a real eye-opener for me. I have always heard of and read about the development in China, but nothing can describe the atmosphere in Beijing once you are actually there. It is a city that is multiplying itself every second. Everywhere you go, you can see skyscrapers being errected day and night. Millions of people live and work there. The new is rapidly replacing the old and there is a sense of optimism in the air, from the conversations I had with several Beijing residents. I went there for the International Congress on Women in Music, and it was a grandurously organized congress with natioanlly recognized venues such as the Forbidden City Concert Hall. Performances were given by faculty musicians, students, and professionals. My composition “Refrain” was magnificently played by yangchin virtuoso Ms. Luo Yuan 揚琴演奏家羅媛. Contemporary music is still a rather new thing in China. The performances hint at a more romantic preference, and music with technology is still at its toddler age. When China aims to showcase its new power in economy, will it also flourish in new arts? Let’s watch with great anticipation.
